Pansy cupcake + display box for Mother’s day

Hello!

Today’s project features an idea I had for Mother’s day and the Poulette’s Blog Hop. The theme was “flowers, flowers, flowers” and I took it quite literally 😉 You can follow the blog hop at the bottom of this post. If you’re coming from Céline’s blog, then you’re at the right place, in case you missed it you can begin the blog hop here. The next blog is Mylou’s… Have fun visiting these talented ladies 🙂

I wanted to create a cupcake-like flower pot where I could hide chocolate, combining two of my Mum’s loves. I couldn’t spend as much time as I would have needed on this project because I was busy welcoming our new addition to our house : our lovely baby boy, Alexandre, who was born on the 17th of May 🙂

I went on Pinterest to find a cupcake wrapper template, you can find the one I used here. I printed and fussy cut it and then decorated it with the Dots decorative Mask from Stampin’Up!, using a sponge dauber and Daffodil Delight ink pad. I used a hand punch to make the little holes on the scallop edge of the wrapper.

For the box I had a precise idea in mind but nothing on Pinterest was close enough, so I had to figure out how to build one from scratch. If you’re interested, I’ll post later the template and the measurements. A piece of acetate allows to see the cupcake inside the box, and the sides were decorated with the same decorative mask as the wrapper. To close the box I used two little velcro stick-on adhesives (if you look at the photo below, you’ll see that one of the velcro was stuck on the “lid” part… I didn’t pay attention to that before editing the photos, ugggghhh! sorry about that.). I put a piece of Daffodil Delight cardstock on the back of the box so that the cupcake stands better against the whole “dots abundance” of the box (lol). I stamped my sentiment in Elegant Eggplant on a strip of Whisper White cardstock and added a bow (love that punch!) from Elegant Eggplant cardstock on the front of the box.

Now for the fun part: the pansies 🙂

I took my inspiration on this blog and decided to keep the same colours as the pansies were lovely. It really is very simple and easy to make, and I love “stretching” my punches and finding new ways to play with them. For the leaves I used a little punch I had in my stash, that looked a little bit like the real ones – not Stampin’Up! though.

Now for the not-so-fun part: putting everything together to make my pretend-cupcake look (almost) like a real one… I admit I struggled. But, hey, that’s how you learn, don’t you? So here is my first attempt, but I’ll try to make it better later (when I don’t have a newborn and two toddlers that require all my free time, that is… 😉 ). My intention was to fill the wrapper with chocolate and then put a piece of green felt to make a grassy background for the pansies, but it wasn’t round enough so I filled it with cotton and tried desperately to make the felt stay in place… couldn’t really figure out how to do it properly, so it’s still a bit wonky, but if you keep your eyes on the pansies, you don’t see it too much lol 😀

To carry the box and hide it until my Mum opened it, I decorated a bag with a tag and a pansy. I love these little touches that tie everything together.

Here is a close-up of the tag :

The tag was made with a piece of Whisper White cardstock and a round corner punch, and a hand punch for the hole. The ribbon and baker’s twine were in my stash. A few rhinestones bring the “mandatory” bling every project must have 😉

I hope you like it… it definitely needs improvement (you can follow this blog to keep updated) but it was a fun project to make nonetheless.

If you like the pansy punch, you can find more blog posts about it here, or other 3D flowers here or there.

You can now go on hop on the next blog : next one is Mylou’s blog!

I’d like to link my project to The Card Concept Challenge : can you guess what my inspiration was? 😉
